Fatal accident Saturday on I-94 near Sauk Centre

Update: The accident report has been updated to include the name of the driver as James Joseph Peifer, 61, of Brooklyn Center.
Fatal accident Saturday on I-94 near Sauk Centre
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Department, Sauk Centre Fire Department, as well as the Sauk Centre Ambulance Department were called out this morning to assist the Minnesota State Patrol at the scene of a one-vehicle accident on I-94. The accident occurred Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7:54 a.m. one mile east of Highway 71, in Sauk Centre Township.
​The vehicle, a 2015 Freightliner tractor trailer, was westbound on I-94, went off the road and struck trees. Road conditions were dry at the time of the accident.
​The driver, a 61-year-old male from Brooklyn Center, has not been identified. Information on the driver will be released today at 8 p.m.
​Other information is believed to be complete.

Expect weekday lane closures, delays on Highway 71 south of Sauk Centre

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Motorists traveling south of Sauk Centre on Highway 71 may encounter weekday lane closures and delays as crews perform road maintenance through Friday, February 24.
Work will occur on weekdays, on good weather days. No work will occur on Presidents’ Day Monday, February 20.
Highway 71 will be reduced to a single lane. Flaggers will allow one-way, alternating traffic through the work zone. Watch for road signs and flaggers, and be prepared to stop when approaching the work zone.

The closures are needed while maintenance crews crack seal the road surface.

The Prairie Centre North Stars (9-15-1) earned the No. 8 seed in Section 6A hockey today.

The Prairie Centre North Stars (9-15-1) earned the No. 8 seed in Section 6A hockey today.

They will host No. 9 seeded Breckenridge/Wahpeton (8-11) this Saturday in Sauk Centre at 7 p.m. in a "play-in" game.

St. Cloud Cathedral earned the top seed followed by No. 2 Alexandria, No. 3 Sartell, No. 4 Little Falls, No. 5 Fergus Falls, No. 6 River Lakes, and No. 7 Wadena/Deer Creek.

The winner of the North Stars/Blades game Saturday will face top-seeded St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday in St. Cloud. The Stars and Blades split their contests this season with B/W winning 6-2 on Jan. 6 and Prairie Centre winning 7-4 on Feb. 2.

"It's always good to have a home playoff game," said head coach Chad Wehrman. "This should be a good game. We hope we get a lot of fans out to support our seniors and the team in their final home game."
