Alcuin J. “Al” Gangl, age 90 of Melrose, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Daniel M. Welle
Daniel M. “Dan” Welle, age 85, of Sauk Centre, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Fr. Tim Wenzel officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9-10 a.m. Thursday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be held at 4:30 p.m. and the veterans prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Dan was born to Leo and Barbara (Lehner) Welle on Sept. 10, 1931, in Albany. He graduated from Albany High School and attended St. Cloud State University for one year. Dan was honorably discharged having served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

Sylvester B. Uphus
Sylvester Bernard Uphus died peacefully in his sleep Sunday morning, Jan. 1, 2017. He celebrated his 89th birthday three days before that on Dec. 29 in characteristic style, with a speech delivered by himself and a dinner for 30 attendees to follow. Hospitality was always a high value for him.
Sylvester was born to Herman and Helen Uphus on Dec. 29, 1927, in Grove Township, Stearns County. He was a WWII veteran, having enlisted at age 18 in the United States Navy. He served two years on USS Bremerton and was honorably discharged Dec. 22, 1947. He was proud of his military service and made many military friends during and after his service. After military service, Sylvester completed the ag school program at St. John’s in Collegeville. He was a lifelong active member of Knights of Columbus, VFW and American Legion.

Urban H. “Urb” Toenies, age 96 of Freeport, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
Urban Henry Toenies was born Nov. 1, 1920, in Millwood Township, Stearns County, to Gerhard and Wilhelmina (Steinke) Toenies. He farmed the Century Toenies Farm in Millwood Township, Stearns County all his life. His family celebrated his 96th birthday in November on the farm, and a few days later, he mowed his lawn. His enjoyment was mowing his lawn, driving around the farm in his Polaris Ranger, watching cowboy movies, playing 500 and pull tabs. He also enjoyed visiting with family and friends and going out to eat.
Urb was a member of Holy Name Society and Crosier Apostolate.

Jacob Dale “Jake” Wolbeck, age 21 of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Dec. 19, 2016.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment was held in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.
Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. Monday and from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Parish prayers were held at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the church.
Jacob Dale Wolbeck was born Jan. 9, 1995, in Willmar, to Duane and Gail (Clear) Wolbeck. He graduated from Melrose High School in 2013 and earned his Commercial Driver License from Alexandria Technical College. Jake purchased a house in St. Cloud and was working as a truck driver for Northern Metal Recycling.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Herman Hammel, of Sauk Centre and formerly of Bertha, was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Dec. 27, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bertha with Father Matthew Crane as celebrant. Visitation was held on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Domian-Anderson Chapel in Bertha with Rosary at 5 p.m. and prayers at 6 p.m. Visitation resumed at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
Herman Joseph Hammel, formerly of Bertha, residing in Sauk Centre the past nine years, passed away on Dec. 20, 2016, at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Sudhansu officiating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be held 9:30-11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church Upper Gathering Room prior to the funeral mass.

Mary D. Warner
Mary D. Warner, age 90 of Sauk Centre, passed away surrounded by family Dec. 20, 2016, at Riverview Manor Apartments in Sauk Centre.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1 p.m. Dec. 27, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation was from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church Upper Gathering Room in Sauk Centre.
Mary Dorothy Chisholm was born Feb. 9, 1926, in Sauk Centre to Kenneth Donald and Ida Elizabeth (Kiffmeyer) Chisholm. Following high school, she began studying to become a nurse in Duluth, and completed her Licensed Practical Nurse program in St. Cloud. On Dec. 20, 1945, Mary was united in marriage to her husband, Charles P. “Chuck” Warner in Villard. She was the proud mother of three children.
