Jonathan W. Schlaak

Jonathan W. Schlaak, age 44 of the Padua area, passed away Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, at the home of his parents from complications of diabetes, which he dealt with since age 7.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove Lake with Rev. Philip Beyersdorf officiating. Family inurnment service will be held at a later time.
Visitation was from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Jonathan Wayne Schlaak was born on Nov. 26, 1971, to Wayne and Nancy (Poock) Schlaak in Waseca. He attended elementary school at Peace Lutheran School, 9th grade at Bethlehem Academy, and then senior high all in Fairbault. He graduated from Fairbault Senior High School in 1990. Jon then went on to Alexandria Technical College to work on small engines and later on went to Ridgewater College in Willmar for welding.

Elizabeth A. ‘Bette’ Michels

Elizabeth A. “Bette” Michels (Schammel), age 79 of Belle Plaine, formerly of Shakopee and Sauk Centre, passed away Aug. 3, 2016, at Kingsway Retirement Community in Belle Plaine.
Bette was born in Rose Creek on Dec. 9, 1936. She married Robert (Bob) Michels on Dec. 27, 1955.
They raised six children living the majority of their married life in Shakopee, but enjoyed spending summers at their cabin in Sauk Centre.
Bette was a homemaker, a member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary in Shakopee and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Sauk Centre as well as a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed her work at Michel’s Accounting and Tax alongside Bob and had many fond memories working at the A & W in Shakopee.

Marie E. Korf

Marie E. Korf, age 100 of Elrosa, was welcomed into heaven on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, at her home in Elrosa.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at STS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa with Rev. Joseph Korf officiating and Rev. Peter Kirchner presiding. Interment took place in the parish cemetery following the service. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, and one hour prior to the service Monday, all at the church. A rosary was prayed by the Christian Mothers at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m.

Donna Backen

Donna Backen
Donna Backen, age 50 of Monticello, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at her home. A memorial service was held Saturday, July 23, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church; 9300 Jason Ave NE in Monticello. Visitation was from 2 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church.
Donna was born on May 5, 1966, in Sauk Centre to Darwin and Deloris (Nemmers) Judes. She married Robert (Bob) Backen on June 17, 2000.
She is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob); mother, Deloris Judes; grandmother, Lillian Nemmers; brothers, Darron Judes of Montrose, and Delwin (Theresa) Judes of Sauk Centre; sisters, Doreen (Wade) Finch of West Richland, Wash., Diane Anderson of Buffalo, Debra (Dennis) Mostad of Eden Prairie and Denise (Brad) Harkman of Cokato; sister-in-law, Candi Peach of Brooklyn Park; brother-in-law, Bill (Shirley) Backen of Brooklyn Center; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Linda C Proell

Linda C (Rodger) Proell passed away July 20, 2016,from a short battle with cancer.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 28 at the Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Visitation will take place one hour before the service.
Linda was born January 12, 1940, to John and Deloris Korteum. She married Rodger J. Proell, October 15, 1955. She worked at Fingerhut as a Supervisor in Animal fair, sewing and mailing division. Linda then went on to work at Knute Nelson in Alexandria, The Palmer House and Cabinet Components in Sauk Centre. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, woodworking and the outdoors. She especially enjoyed her condo up in Northern Minnesota with her grandchildren. Linda was a member of the Our Lady of the Angels Church and The Red Hat Society.

Iris E. Froh

Iris Elaine Froh, age 91, Long Prairie, died Saturday, July 9, 2016, at CentraCare Health Care Center, Sauk Centre.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 15, at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Long Prairie. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Long Prairie. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud.
Iris was born July 17, 1924, in Round Prairie Township, to George and Emma (Bliese) Johnson. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 23, 1939, by Pastor E. T. Heyne. Iris married Randolph Froh on June 26, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Long Prairie. She and her husband, Randolph, farmed in Kandota Township for 33 years. In 1980, they retired to a home in Long Prairie. Iris was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Mildred L. Pierson

Mildred L. Pierson, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2016, at the age of 102 in Sauk Centre, at CentraCare Health Hospital in Sauk Centre.
A Memorial service was held on Saturday, July 9, at 11 a.m. at the First United Church of Christ in Sauk Centre with a luncheon following at the church. Gathering of family and friends began at 10 a.m. Inurnment was at Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre.
Millie was born June 3, 1914, and was raised on the farm north of town. She attended a one-room school for her first eight grades and then attended Sauk Centre High School. She married her next door sweetheart, Loren, and they traveled throughout central Minnesota as Loren worked for Standard Oil and Minar Ford. In 1957, they returned to Sauk Centre eventually living on the family farm. They moved to town in 1970 prior to Loren’s retirement and untimely passing.
Millie was a long-time member of the First United Church of Christ, the Red Hat Society and Birthday Club.

Philomene Kleinfehn

Philomene Kleinfehn was called home July 6, 2016, only 45 days after her husband, Roman passed away. She was a resident of the Community Memorial Home in Osakis.
Philomene Anna Hoppe was born on Sept. 27, 1923, in New Munich, to Herman and Anna (Schaefer) Hoppe. She grew up on a farm and attended country school. As a young woman Philomene did housekeeping work for area farm families for as little as a stick of gum and a dime per week. Later she was hired to do both housekeeping and dietary duties at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Clarence Wilking

Clarence (Buddy) Gerd Wilking was born Feb. 21, 1928, in Canby to Gerd and Anne Wilking. They moved to Montevideo in 1937. Clarence was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Clarence farmed until 1951 and then worked road construction.
On Dec. 20, 1985, he married Charlotte (Chuckie). Clarence enjoyed working with his hands building homes, furniture, fixing things, fishing and ice fishing.
Clarence passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring, at the age of 88 years, 4 months and 4 days. Services were held on Saturday, July 9, at 11 a.m. at Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring.

George J. Hunter

George Jay Hunter, age 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at Galeon in Oaskis on Thursday, June 30, 2016.  
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, July 9, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre at 10 a.m., with visitation one hour prior.
Separate interment to be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a later date.
George Jay Hunter was born on Sept. 16, 1923, in Minneapolis to John and Pearl (Nelson) Hunter.  George married Jacquelin Virginia Enright on Sept. 24, 1943, prior to leaving for Europe for WWII.  George was a member of the United States Army Air Corps 8th Air Force, 385th Bomb Group, 550th Squadron. He flew 32 missions as a ball turret gunner, many of which were in the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “RumDum.”
